In the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, the Taiwanese American Citizens League (TACL) reiterates our support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the World Health Organization (WHO).

This support has been echoed by leaders all over the world, with more joining the chorus every week.

The absence of Taiwan from the WHO prevents Taiwan from sharing critical health knowledge, such as the possibility of human-to-human transmission as early as December, as well as methods to help prevent the spread of the disease.

Despite the close proximity to mainland China, Taiwan has implemented a number of successful policies that have resulted in only 432 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 6 related deaths (at the time of this writing). Moreover, Taiwan has achieved this without restrictive lockdown measures and business closures, allowing the economy to continue and residents to go about their daily lives.

One key policy that contributed to this was the decision to increase production and distribution of masks, which has also allowed Taiwan to donate millions of masks to countries throughout the world, including those with whom Taiwan does not have formal diplomatic relations.

TACL once again urges the WHO to extend an invitation to Taiwan to participate meaningfully in future meetings and discussions so that Taiwan can provide assistance and expertise on the current pandemic as well as with any future global health crises that may arise. #taiwancanhelp

With the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of a global health emergency due to the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)/COVID-19, the Taiwanese American Citizens League (TACL) reiterates our support for Taiwan’s participation in the WHO. This support is echoed by leaders all over the world. The absence of Taiwan from the WHO prevents Taiwan from sharing critical health knowledge, such as the possibility of human to human transmission as early as December, as well as methods to help prevent the spread of the disease. Taiwan, which is off the coast of China, has a population of 23 million+ people and have not only kept the amount of confirmed COVID-19 cases at 432 and 6 deaths, (at the time of this writing) but they have done so without restrictive lockdown measures and business closures. TACL urges WHO to extend an official invitation to Taiwan for future meetings and discussions so that Taiwan can help with the current pandemic as well as with any future issues that arise. #taiwancanhelp
