Taiwanese Americans are increasingly using the more common race category to self-identify their ethnic heritage over the less common ancestry category, potentially resulting in more data being available on Taiwanese Americans.

In 2021, just over half of the Taiwanese American population in the U.S. were concentrated in 9 metro areas with the largest Taiwanese populations.

With more than 80% having earned at least a Bachelor’s degree by 2021, Taiwanese adults aged 25 years and older had much higher levels of educational attainment than their counterparts in the total U.S. and Asian American populations.

Median incomes for Taiwanese-led households remain higher than for Asian American-led and all households.

Taiwanese Americans have seen a consistent improvement in poverty rates over time compared to Asian Americans and Americans in general.

Poverty rates for Taiwanese and Asian American seniors remain higher than than of seniors in general.

Taiwanese American homeownership rates had either increased or held steady during this time period while other groups have seen homeownership rates fluctuate between 2010 and 2021.

Taiwanese Americans were more likely to have health insurance coverage than Americans as a whole and Asian Americans.

Taiwanese and Asian American seniors had slightly lower health insurance coverage rates compared to Americans as a whole, likely due to some immigrant seniors’ lack of eligibility for Medicare coverage.

The Taiwanese American and Asian American populations remained majority immigrant compared to the American population as a whole, with Taiwanese Americans slightly more likely to be citizens and voting-age citizens than Asian Americans.

Over time, the Taiwanese American population has become less immigrant=-based. The increase in citizenship among Taiwanese Americans has not resulted in major changes in the voting age citizen population.

The growth in the population of citizens under 18 years old has overshadowed the growth of the citizen voting-age population (CVAP) in the Taiwanese American population.

Taiwanese and Asian Americans had higher limited English proficiency (LEP) rates than Americans as a whole in 2021. In particular, more than 2 in 3 Taiwanese seniors having difficulty speaking English.

Los Angeles Area included the three Census Bureau-defined metropolitan statistical areas of Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA Metro Area, Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA Metro Area, and Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA Metro Area
New York City Area included the Census Bureau-defined metropolitan statistical area of New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metro Area
San Francisco Area included the Census Bureau-defined metropolitan statistical area of San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, CA Metro Area
San Jose Area included the Census Bureau-defined metropolitan statistical area of San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA Metro Area
Seattle Area included the Census Bureau-defined metropolitan statistical area of Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA Metro Area
Washington DC Area included the Census Bureau-defined metropolitan statistical area of Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metro Area
Houston Area included the Census Bureau-defined metropolitan statistical area of Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, TX Metro Area
Dallas Area included Census Bureau defined metropolitan statistical area of Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX Metro Area
