Keep Making It Count

Pew Correction Issued on 9/8/2021This is an update of a post originally published May 22, 2019. On Sept. 8, 2021, data for 2000, 2010 and 2019 for “Taiwanese,” “Chinese, except Taiwanese” and “Okinawan” was added to the first table to encompass the full Census Bureau tabulation

Pew published an accompanying blog diving into Taiwanese counts.

Detail for Disaggregated Data from 2020 Census is set to be available by September 30, 2021; however, here is the 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) Data – #KeepMakingItCount:
1 Year Estimates Table
5 Year Estimates Table

During the AAPI Month in 2021 – we are encouraged by reports looking into the diversity that makes up the Asian American community – here is our list of who did it well and who (well) still need to do better:

Who Did Well? Showed or listed more than just two or three of the disaggregated data set from the 2019 American Community Survey (ACS)
CNN – May 6, 2021
VOX – May 5, 2021
NPR – May 25, 2021
Pew – May 13, 2021 (another Pew researcher did not erase Taiwanese)

Who still needs to do better? Erased parts of or full categories of AAPI identities
Pew – April 29, 2021 – erased Taiwanese and Okinawan self reported counts

TACL is a non-profit organization founded in 1985 with the mission to enhance the quality of life of Taiwanese Americans. Two key ways we fulfill our mission are by promoting Taiwanese Americans’ engagement in the American democratic system and by encouraging the full and robust participation in the Census every 10 years.

When a community is undercounted, it risks being under-represented and under-funded
