On this day, TACL proudly joins people around the world to celebrate International Women’s Day and to raise awareness for this year’s #PressForProgress campaign.
In the past year, women’s rights in the U.S. gained significant momentum with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, but there is still much that we as a community need to do to create a society that empowers women.
As a society, we must press for employment policies that uplift women in all industries and close the gender wage gap (especially for women of color) because #PovertyIsSexist.
We must continue to advocate for reproductive healthcare access and coverage because adequate healthcare access is a basic human right.
We must change the patriarchal and oftentimes misogynistic attitudes that pervade social and institutional systems because women have been oppressed for too long.
It is also important to remember that this day is not only for Americans, but for women all around the world.
Many countries have made great strides in women’s rights, with some even boasting elected women heads of state, like Taiwan. However, there are still many countries where women are openly discriminated against through employment and healthcare policies, and discouraged from seeking their own careers and successes independently of a man. Taiwan is not innocent of that, and neither is the Taiwanese American community, and there is more that we can do to change the attitudes of our community to encourage women to pursue their dreams and empower them to succeed.
The month of March also happens to be Women’s History Month in the United States, and TACL will highlight some amazing Taiwanese American women. Telling the stories of diverse Taiwanese American women can help to inspire other young Taiwanese American women to do something they never thought possible before.
Keep an eye out for more posts later this month showcasing awesome women in our community! And if you have any recommendations for women you think should be featured e-mail us at info@tacl.org.
