With the 2016 primary season winding down, the major party nominations will soon be made. The road to the general election is sure to be eventful and it is important that every voice in each generation in our community is heard. Voter registration guidelines vary from state to state and can be confusing. Make sure to find out the most up to date information from your state and keep having these conversations with your family and friends.

General Election DAY is TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2016

For this summer, here’s TACL’s checklist for the general election:

1. Register to Vote

Still haven’t registered? It doesn’t take long! In some states, all it you’ll need is your driver’s license and some time to fill out a form online. Most states require registering by a certain point before the election so remember to do so ASAP!

(vote.usa.gov will point you in the right direction for all your voting needs)

2. Sign Up for an Absentee Ballot

Already know you can’t vote in person on election day? You can still cast your vote, but be sure to sign up to have an absentee ballot mailed to you beforehand. You can usually find this information near voter registration information through your Secretary of State or Division of Elections.

3. Run a Voter Registration Drive in your Community

Engage your fellow community members by seeing if you can host a voter registration drive for your social or cultural organizations. Be sure to check with your state to see if there are any guidelines on running a drive. The organizer may need to receive training from local officials. This information will also be available from your state’s Secretary of State or Division of Elections.

4. Share with us on social media

What issues are important to you and your family? We want to know. Be sure to share your stories on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtags #TAvote and #lifeTA and tag us @taclorg. It can just be a certain issue you feel strongly about or something that has impacted you and your family closely. TACL wants the Taiwanese American community to be an active voice in the progress of our government!

5. Find out what else will be on the ballot in November!

2016 is not just a presidential election year! Find out what else will be on the ballot in your state, county, or even town this November. You’ll be voting for congressional representation, and possibly local leaders or ordinances that will impact your daily life. It will help to be prepared when it comes time to hit the voting booth.

We will be providing more information throughout the year on how to take action. The federal government already provides some resources for how to register and vote where you live. Visit https://www.usa.gov/register-to-vote. Stay tuned for TACL’s Get-Out-the-Vote in 2016!
