The Washington Metropolitan Association of Chinese Schools (WMACS) is a network of Chinese Schools in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. Since 1989 WMACS has sponsored a week long, overnight summer camp for kids 8-18. With a variety of classes ranging from folk sports to chorus to lion dance, the purpose of the camp is for campers to learn more about Chinese heritage and culture. Throughout the week, campers have an opportunity to develop relationships with fellow campers and counselors that will hopefully continue after the week is over.

Camp is the singular experience that really drew my true personality out of my shell, transforming me from a shy, awkward, minority kid, to a confident, outgoing, and proud leader. Who knew that just being around so many others from a common background with whom I could relate would be the key to that transformation?
