With the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of a global health emergency due to the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), the Taiwanese American Citizens League (TACL) reiterates our support for Taiwan’s participation in the WHO. This support is echoed by leaders in Japan and Canada. The absence of Taiwan from the WHO meetings creates a gap in the global health network. While Taiwan is equipped with advanced medical research and methods of disease prevention, the WHO’s denial of Taiwan’s right to collaborate and participate in real-time knowledge sharing with other members of the WHO places the 23 million+ people of Taiwan at risk of potential outbreaks and health epidemics, especially during this critical juncture as there are, at the time of publication, 10 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Taiwan. To ensure there are no gaps in safeguarding the health of the world and the people of Taiwan, TACL urges WHO to extend an official invitation to Taiwan for any future meetings regarding the coronavirus.
