SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

President’s Message

Happy New Year everyone!  While 2009 was a challenging year all around. There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel as we welcomed 2010.  We saw one of the largest TAPpy Hour at the Santa Monica Wokcano back in December, where 150+ of you enjoyed an awesome night under a beautiful West LA sky.  It gave us such a big boost for our new team of TAP officers.   Also in December, community service director Joy Cheng coordinated yet again an awesome community service event with Heartfelt Foundation where we got to donate the unwrapped toys we collected from our Annual Christmas Dinner to the children of Inner city Los Angeles.  We also stepped up to the firing line and had a great time in the outdoors shooting everything from still targets to sporting clays.

In January, we also had another blockbuster TAPpy Hour success at Formosa Café.  In the next few months, you can expect an Annual Lunar Dinner event, a Speed Networking event in Pasadena, a trip to the movies for the much anticipated film Formosa Betrayed, the TAP Annual Ski/Snowboard Trip, a Global Jobs seminar, tax seminar, and an exciting white-water rafting trip!  As always, if you would like to step up your involvement and give more of your time back to the community, feel free to contact any of the officers to get more involved in this great organization.

Yours in service,

Ed Chen
President, Taiwanese American Professionals

APPLY FOR THE CITIZENS REDISTRICTING COMMISSION TODAY!

Currently, less than 5% of California’s new redistricting commission applicants consist of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), which is not reflective of California’s diversity, where 15% of the state’s population is AAPI. Up-to-date statistics can be found at https://application.wedrawthelines.ca.gov/statistics.

TACL is encouraging its members and Taiwanese American community to apply to be one of the commission members. After Census 2010, the voting lines in California will be redrawn.  Due to Proposition 11, a 14-person citizens commission will be in charge of redistricting in 2011.  To apply, applicants must fill out an online form.  The form can be found at www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov and the deadline is February 12, 2010

Asian American and Pacific Islander community organizations will be conducting application information workshops during January and the first part of February throughout the state of California to assist individuals with the application.  A schedule of the workshops can be found at www.facebook.com/capafr2011

For more information about the commission or the workshops, please contact Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC) at redistricting@apalc.org.  Also, the California State Auditor has information posted on its website at
www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov/toolkit.html.

CENSUS 2010 is coming up in April. Please help get the word out to check: "Other Asian" and write in "Taiwanese," so we can be counted and recognized. For more information, please click on the image below or visit: census2010.tacl.org.

TACL encourages youth to educate and help mobilize the community for the Census 2010 campaign and get a $500 grant

The US is conducting their decennial Census in 2010 and we invite students and groups to explain, “Why is it important for Taiwanese Americans to be counted in the Census?”

The objectives of the TACL Census 2010 grant contest are to:

  1. Increase awareness about Census 2010 and get students to think about its importance to the Taiwanese American community and how it relates to their community and future.
  2. Promote community involvement and social service.
  3. Recognize students with leadership qualities as well as a commitment to civic and public service.

TAP congratulates Officer Angela Chang’s appointment to the Board of Asian Youth Center!

2010 Annual Taiwanese American Lunar New Year Celebration

2010 Annual Lunar New Year Celebration: "Taiwanese Americans in the New Decade: Projecting Our Presence"

Presented by TaiwaneseAmerican.org and the 2nd generation Taiwanese American organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area
*TAP-SF, TACL-LYF, FAPA-YPG, TJCC, Young TAITA, NATEA 2, NATMA 2G, and NATWA II

We proudly present the annual Lunar New Year celebration of the Taiwanese American community and invite you to join the 2nd Generation Program highlighting the theme "Projecting Our Presence" as it applies to media, representation, and our own personal paths.

We are proud to host this special event featuring the production team and actors behind the upcoming Hollywood motion picture FORMOSA BETRAYED! A political action thriller set in 1980's Taiwan, it follows a web of intrigue and surprise through the eyes of an FBI detective (played by James Van Der Beek of Dawson's Creek) assigned to investigate the murder of a Taiwanese American professor and gives a glimpse of a democracy movement that shaped this island nation.

Starting the weekend of Feb 26-28, FORMOSA BETRAYED will begin opening in theaters nationwide! We are proud to present producer/actor Will Tiao, director/producer Adam Kane (Heroes), associate producer Jon Lee, actor Tzi Ma (Rush Hour), actor Adam Wang, and actor Henry Chu at our gathering. The event will be preceded by brief presentations on the history of Taiwan upon which the movie is set and an introduction by author Shawna Yang Ryan discussing Asian Americans and our emergence in the media.

We are also honored to welcome special guests, Taiwanese metal star Freddy Lim of ChthoniC who is single-handedly inspiring a new generation of Taiwanese youth identity, and exiled Uyghur activist Rebiya Kadeer, subject of the 2009 award-winning documentary film "The 10 Conditions of Love." Following the presentations, Q&A, and photo opportunities, we will host a young professionals and collegiate networking event focusing on how we as Asian Americans can project our presence in various careers and in the community.

Join us for this annual celebration of the Taiwanese American community as we highlight how far we've come and our hopes for the new decade! This is the event you don't want to miss!

Meet the New Officers

TAP is an all volunteer-run organization.  In this issue, we want to take the time to recognize the service and contributions of our new officers.  In case you haven’t met them yet, please take a moment to introduce yourself at the next event. Leading the pack is our Secretary Connie Hwang, whom you have probably received many Facebook message invites and reminders from; Angela Chang, a former Taiwanese American Citizens League political intern, and an energetic addition to our officer team; Eddy Chen, who has brought to you the most recent TAPpy Hours, and dinner groups; and David Fan, who has brought to us a lot of energy and all-around publicity to our events.

Also, on behalf of Taiwanese American Professionals, we continue to thank all staff and volunteers who have given their time, energy, and commitment to helping TAP behind the scenes!
