TAP Hiking Echo Mountain Via the Haunted Forest

Date/Time: Sunday, July 11th, 2010, 11:00 am

Location:
Gravity Hill, Entrance of Cobb Estates (Haunted Forest)
Lake Ave & E Loma Alta Dr
Altadena

RSVP

Since the intrigue and interest in the occult is built in to the Taiwanese DNA, TAP is delighted to present to you the San Gabriel Valley Urban Legend - The Haunted Forest in Pasadena/Altadena.  We will be going during the day time, however, where there isn't anything spooky or haunted.

Enjoy the great outdoors and hike up to a San Gabriel Valley historic landmark as you take in the breathtaking scenery.  We will meet at the Iron Gates to the Haunted Forest.  Please park along Lake Avenue or Alta Loma, also known as Gravity Hill.  (If you went to high school in the San Gabriel Valley, you probably spent some time there with friends; if you've never heard of it, Google it).

We are meeting early so it doesn't get too hot.  From the Cobb Estate botanical garden to Echo Mountain is 5 miles round trip with 1,400-foot elevation gain.  Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.  This event is FREE for members.  If you're not a member yet, why don't you join already?!

The hike: From the great iron gate of the old Cobb Estate, follow the trail along the chain-link fence.  The path dips into Las Flores Canyon, crosses a seasonal creek in the canyon bottom, then begins to climb. As you begin your earnest, but well-graded ascent, enjoy good, over-the-shoulder views of the San Gabriel Valley and downtown Los Angeles. Two long, steep and mostly shadeless miles of travel brings you to a signed junction. Bear right and walk 100 yards along the bed of the old Mount Lowe Railway to the Echo Mountain ruins. Just before the ruins is a drinking fountain, very welcome if it's a hot day.

Up top, you'll spot the railway's huge bull wheel, now embedded in cement, and just below is a pile of concrete rubble, all that remains of the railway depot. The steps and foundation of the Echo Mountain House are great places to take a break and enjoy the view straight down precipitous Rubio Canyon, the route of Lowe's railway. . . Echo Mountain takes its name from the echo that bounces around the semicircle of mountain walls.  www.trailmaster.com

Kick off Taiwanese Heritage Week with a Taiwanese Food Fair at the Taiwanese Center!

When you were growing up, did your family ever go to "bazaars" held by the Taiwanese community? These food fairs were like daytime night markets.

This year, TAP-SD will have it's very first booth. If you would like to help us make/sell "almond tofu", we'd appreciate the help! Make sure to show up on time for this event. The popular foods always sell out fast!

More details of Taiwan Heritage Week events at the Taiwan Center are forthcoming.

Synopsis: In the early 1980s, an FBI Agent is assigned to investigate the murder of a respected professor. Through his investigation, he unearths a spider web of international secrets that has been thriving within college campuses across America for decades. His investigation takes him across the Pacific to the island nation of Taiwan, where with the help of the outspoken widow and an unlikely spy, he learns that the Professor's killing was not a random act, but a desperate move by a scandalous government intent on keeping its nefarious activities under wraps. Our detective soon finds himself on a collision course against the U.S. State Department, the Chinese Mafia, and the Nationalist Chinese Government - in a land where the truth is not what it seems and the only people he can trust, cannot be trusted at all. Inspired by actual events.

TAP Booth at Alhambra Lunar Festival

Location:
Valley Blvd. between Garfield and Almansor,
Alhambra, CA

INFO

Join TAP and our affiliate TACL at the Alhambra Lunar Festival.  Stop by our booth: A3!

Alhambra Chamber of Commerce, along with the Cities of Alhambra and San Gabriel, will once again bring the Lunar New Year celebration to our community. The Lunar New Year is a time to cast away the bad blood of the previous year and wish for good fortune in the coming year.

Now in its 19th year, the celebration is recognized as one of the most prominent ethnic events in the region.

Under the global economy slowdown, this year the parade has been cancelled. However, the festival will be enlarged with an additional stage and more activities to be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010.  The one-day street festival will be held on Valley Blvd., between Garfield Ave. and Almansor St., an area known as the heart of the largest Asian-American commercial district in the Southland. With 250 booths, it offers the community a glimpse of Asian customs and traditions.

There's nothing more precious than spending a day with family and friends to experience the colorful, festive celebration of the New Year.  Admission is free. There will be abundant parking on the streets and at the adjacent shopping centers.

Info: www.lunarnewyearparade.com

TAP and TACL will have a booth to also help promote for Census 2010 (http://census2010.tacl.org).  If anyone is interested in volunteering at the booth, and helping with Census outreach at the Festival, contact TACL National President Ben Ling

We are proud to present producer/actor Will Tiao, director/producer Adam Kane (Heroes), associate producer Jon Lee, actor Tzi Ma (Rush Hour), actor Adam Wang, and actor Henry Chu at our gathering. The event will be preceded by brief presentations on the history of Taiwan upon which the movie is set and an introduction by author Shawna Yang Ryan discussing Asian Americans and our emergence in the media.

We are also honored to welcome special guests, Taiwanese metal star Freddy Lim of ChthoniC who is single-handedly inspiring a new generation of Taiwanese youth identity, and exiled Uyghur activist Rebiya Kadeer, subject of the 2009 award-winning documentary film "The 10 Conditions of Love." Following the presentations, Q&A, and photo opportunities, we will host a young professionals and collegiate networking event focusing on how we as Asian Americans can project our presence in various careers and in the community.

[Bridge Mixer (Social Networking Event)]

During a difficult economy, it's more important than ever to strengthen our community bonds and connections! This isn't a job fair, but as many of us know, networking opens doors for opportunities. So why not start with fellow Taiwanese-Americans?

This social networking event is a function primarily aimed at the local college community in providing students with networking opportunities to working professionals within the TAP community. And it's an opportunity for our TAP members to continue connecting with each other.

Taiwanese and Taiwanese American Student Associations (TSAs and TASAs) from schools such as Academy of Art University, UC-Berkeley, Stanford, San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco, Golden Gate University, and others will be participating in this mixer.

To help everyone get better acquainted, we'll be leading some informal and fun ice breaker activities with the students and young professionals.

Food will be complimentary of Empero Taste restaurant located in the Outer Richmond of San Francisco. There will be enough for everyone to have a full course catered meal (fried rice, fried noodles, and a variety of Chinese entrees). Beverages included.

There will also be a live DJ (Evin Kepik) and live performances by Taiwanese American artists throughout different segments of the event.

The event will take place on October 10 between 5-9PM at 55 2nd Street. Don't miss out! We're expecting well over 300 attendees!

Cost: $10 if you prepay, $15 at the door

1
JOYFUL LIFE (LE SHENG)
(Taiwan, 2007) 50 min. Dir.: Anita Chang
Film Language(s): Mandarin, Minnan and Taiwanese w/E.S.
SAT, MAY 03 - 06:00 PM | Directors Guild of America, Theater 3
Lo-Sheng ("Joyful Life") leprosy colony was established in 1930 on the Sinjuang hillside in the outskirts of Taipei, Taiwan's capital. In 2002, more than one-third of Lo-Sheng was destroyed due to subway construction and other pending urban development projects. As a result, more than half of the 300 remaining residents moved into the newly constructed hospital nearby. Due to resident, student, and human rights activism, plans for total destruction have stopped. At this point, the sanatorium remains despite continued pressures from the government, private interests, and local civilians to evacuate. Conceived as a collaboration among the residents of Lo-Sheng, a Taiwanese-American filmmaker, documentary students, and cultural workers, filmmaker-lead workshops prepared residents for their own storytelling and filming, creating an intimate portrait of a historically marginalized community and their inspiring determination to protect what they call their home.
Showing in Program 19, on Saturday, May, 03 06:00 PM.

1
THE DRUMMER
(Hong Kong/Taiwan/Germany, 2007) 120 min. Dir./Scr.: Kenneth Bi
Film Language(s): Mandarin w/E.S.
SAT, MAY 03 - 07:00 PM | Directors Guild of America, Theater 1
A young Hong Kong rebel finds inner peace and a sense of purpose with a group of Zen musicians in the hills of Taiwan in THE DRUMMER, an entertaining blend of genre elements and spiritual content that plays much better than it sounds on paper. The incorrigible Sid (Jaycee Chan, son of Jackie) is caught in the bath with the wife of powerful triad boss Stephen Ma. Cocky Sid insults Ma in front of the latter's men. Ma demands both of Sid's hands on a platter from Sid's father, Kwan, who runs a rival gang, but owes Ma a favor. Kwan tracks down Sid and dispatches him to safety to Taiwan, in the company of deputy gang leader, Chiu. We find Sid and Chiu in a Taiwanese village, above which Sid one day finds a reclusive community of Zen drummers who also practice tai chi and martial arts. Mesmerized by their open-air exercises, Sid asks to join-and is tentatively accepted. By never taking itself too seriously, the film manages to stir a spiritual element-the mystical properties of traditional drumming-into what would have been a basic genre movie.
Showing in Program 20, on Saturday, May, 03 07:00 PM.
