1040 is an explosive documentary that focuses on the rapid changes in Asia and the significant shift of spiritual landscape in the area known as the “10/40 Window”- the regions between 10 degrees and 40 degrees North Latitude on the eastern hemisphere. In the film, artist and minister Jaeson Ma takes us on an exciting journey through the Asian countries in the window, showing us the dramatic changes happening on the ground. We visit China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Indonesia. Through incisive observations, intimate interviews with prominent leaders and celebrities, and powerful, never-before-heard stories,1040 dynamically explores a part of our globe that is experiencing vast socioeconomic expansion and profound shift in identity- it is an area that is now nothing less than the frontier of world Christianity.
Featuring Jaeson Ma, Jin the MC, Van Ness Wu, Mike Bickle, Elim Chew, MC Hammer, Sean “Jinusean”, Steven Douglas, Cindy Jacobs
Directed by Evan Jackson Leong. Produced by Anson Ho. Executive Produced by Carl Choi.

Operation Warmth (O/W), a special project that aims to unite the community by collecting & distributing new & gently used blankets & coats to those in need, will be commencing this year on November 23, 2009.
O/W’s main goal is to provide the homeless population of Los Angeles & Orange Counties with a warmer winter.
In the winter months, due to ocean breezes and desert terrain, southern California can become extraordinarily cold at night despite being warm during the day. Seeing as the economy has seen a significant downturn in the past year, thousands of people have become or are homeless in the Los Angeles & Orange County metropolitan areas. With O/W, we hope to provide a renewed sense of hope and vitality in the holiday spirits of all Californians.
This winter, we encourage everyone to donate items to the cause. We are currently finalizing collection details, so please stay tuned for updates!
If you’re interested in getting involved, please email us at givewarmth [at] gmail.com. or visit http://www.operationwarmth.com/ for more information.

The Wokai Los Angeles Chapter is inviting anyone in the Los Angeles area to come by this Thursday to a special Cocktail event at The Green Door. Wokai is the first online person-to-person microfinance lending platform in China and our goal is to empower the impoverished in rural China to lift themselves out of poverty. We are looking to start a Chapter in Los Angeles, and this Cocktail event is open to anyone who is interesting in learning more about our organization as well as microfinance in China. It is a very casual event, a great opportunity for those interested to meet our team, meet others who are interested in microfinance, and also learn about how they can help out. Not to mention, open-bar vodka from 9:30-10:30!
The event details are:
Thursday, December 17
9:00 PM
The Green Door

Los Angeles, CA 90028

If you have any questions or would like to learn more, feel free to contact Jason Phan ( jason.phan@wokai.org)
More about Wokai
Wokai is a U.S. 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating rural poverty in China. Wokai’s unique online platform (www.wokai.org) connects contributors around the world directly with individual farmers and micro-entrepreneurs in rural China in need of small loans. Our goal is to empower the impoverished to lift themselves out of poverty. Over the past year, we’ve raised over $120,000 in loan capital and have been featured on Time, MSNBC, and Newsweek.
Why China?
Despite China's economic boom over the past decades, over 200 million rural Chinese still live on less than $1.25 USD a day. Inequalities have developed and are growing larger by the day, and the "have nots" in rural areas continue to have limited access to basic financial services, healthcare, education and environmental education.
How Wokai Works
Wokai.org is a platform that allows anyone to fund microloans to rural Chinese individuals through a credit card. Contributions can be made for as little as $10 and are tax-deductible. Contributors are able to track the borrower's progress and will be able to redistribute their contributions after the borrower repays. While Chinese regulations currently prevent us from being able to repay foreign lenders, all contributions are used perpetually as microloan capital and are continually recycled. Our sustainable model greatly amplifies the impact of any single contribution.

TUF Saturday Salon Series on Wine
(Co-presented by the Monterey Park Library) |
|
Date/Time: November 18, 2009, 1:30 pm |
|
|
Location:
Monterey Park City Hall Council Chamber
320 W. Newmark Avenue
Monterey Park, CA 91754
|
FREE |
|
The Taiwanese United Fund (TUF), a Taiwanese‐American cultural heritage foundation, joins the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer
Library in inviting you to a fun and informative conversation with a panel of wine experts, and share your wine
experiences or ask anything you have always wanted to know about wine.

The Salon is a community education program co-presented by TUF and the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. The event is open to the general public free of charge. It has been planned specifically with the Asian population in mind as the target audience.
- Reception & Refreshment: 1:30 pm
- Presentation and Q & A: 2-4pm
More details can be found in the linked flyer, but here is an excerpt:
"Wine is a most refined and sophisticated product in Western civilization. Nothing captures the spirit of joy, festivity,
romance, friendship and hospitality better than wine. More so than music, literature and performing arts, wine is inseparable
from its local culture. Different soils, climates and viticulture methods yield grapes of different characters.
Winemaking styles that are cultivated through local cuisine and tradition further underpin a wine’s expression of its locale.
In such places as Asia where wine has not been part of the local culture, it is difficult to express the word WINE and its
profound cultural implications. The word “酒” in Chinese and Japanese, for example, refers to “booze” in English. Like its
English counterpart, the word expresses no cultural implications associated with wine, and may carry a negative rather
than positive connotation. Such a misleading translation only demonstrates how difficult it is in general to transplant a foreign concept or culture."
For more information, look at the linked flyer.

Milkshake LA (MSLA) is an event promotions group that will pledge a portion of all event proceeds to charitable causes. Our goal is to remind people that there is no reason why having a good time can't also mean doing something good at the same time, too.
We are different because of our added personal touch and push for humanitarian causes. Our initial charitable focus is with animal benefit organization, but future beneficiaries may be decided by event attendees via online poll.

This event is to raise awareness about these two Asian American journalists being held in North Korea. The two U.S. journalists, who work for San Francisco-based Current TV - a media venture founded by former Vice President Al Gore, were arrested March 17 near the North Korean border while reporting on refugees living in China. Both women, accused by North Korea of crossing into the country illegally from China and committing “hostile acts,” will be tried on criminal charges on June 4th.

Candlelight vigils will be held in cities across the nation. Join an evening of friends, family, and community to unite for the common goal of bringing Laura and Euna home safely. Guest speaker – Laura’s sister: Lisa Ling. The organizers of the vigils hope to help influence a positive outcome for Laura and Euna. Please show your support and join us in their fight for freedom! Please bring candles for the vigils. We hope you can make it.
This Los Angeles vigil is organized by Welly Yang, Dina Morishita, and Kelly Hu. |
